A Land Acknowledgment

We would like to acknowledge that All Saints’ Church in Belmont is located on the traditional and ancestral territory of the Pawtucket and Massachuset tribes. We thank them for their hospitality and stewardship of this land.

The Massachuset were a Native American tribe who originally inhabited the area now known as the state of Massachusetts, with their primary settlements along the coast, and are considered the indigenous people first encountered by English colonists when they arrived in the region; the name "Massachusetts" itself is derived from the Massachusett tribe. Even before colonial settlement began in the immediate area, the Massachuset population had been greatly reduced by warfare with their northeastern neighbours, the Tarratine. The tribe was decimated by a pestilence in 1617; a smallpox epidemic in 1633 wiped out most remaining members of the tribe, including the chief.
